Zedira Presents First Transglutaminase Award at FEBS Advanced Course 2026 in Padova

Zedira participated in the FEBS Advanced Course “Transglutaminases in Biological Processes”, held from May 25 to 29, 2026 in Padova, Italy.

As part of the scientific program, Zedira introduced the Zedira Transglutaminase Award for ‘Best Talk’, recognizing outstanding contributions to transglutaminase research. The award was presented by Dr. Ralf Pasternack, CEO of Zedira GmbH.

The first recipient of the award is Dr. Mara-Luciana Floare (Sheffield Institute of Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), The University of Sheffield), who was honoured for her presentation:
“Cerebellar Transcriptomic Signatures Implicate Protein Turnover and Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Gluten Ataxia”

Scientific Background of the Award-Winning Work:

Gluten ataxia represents the most common neurological manifestation of gluten sensitivity and is associated with autoimmune responses against transglutaminase 6 (TG6).

In her study, Dr. Floare investigated the transcriptomic profile of cerebellar tissue from patients with gluten ataxia compared to both healthy controls and patients with genetic forms of ataxia. Using microarray-based analysis, her team identified more than 2,000 significantly differentially expressed genes in gluten ataxia.

The results highlighted a marked upregulation of pathways involved in:
• protein degradation
• mitochondrial function and ATP production
At the same time, specific ribosomal RNA components were found to be downregulated.

These findings point towards a characteristic cellular stress response in affected neurons, likely driven by factors such as protein misfolding and oxidative stress. Notably, the observed molecular patterns showed strong similarities to those seen in genetic ataxias, suggesting shared mechanisms underlying cerebellar neurodegeneration.

The Zedira Transglutaminase Award, endowed with 500 € in Zedira products, is designed to support and encourage innovative young researchers in the field.

With this initiative, Zedira underlines its commitment to advancing scientific excellence and fostering cutting-edge research in transglutaminase biology.
